DALLAS INTERNATIONAL STREET CHURCH

September 21, 2021

Hello Dear Friends and Partners of DISC,

At Dallas International Street Church, we celebrate recovery and deliverance every day, but during the month of September it is especially meaningful, because September is National Recovery Month! If there is one thing we know, it is recovery cannot be done alone. Did you know that 8 of every 100 Texans have a substance use disorder? Most of these Texans have an alcohol SUD, but for 1 in 5 the SUD is related to illegal drugs (www.samhsa.gov). Nationally more than 23 million adults have struggled with drug abuse (National Institutes of Health).

While the overall statistics are staggering, we see past the cold numbers and see the faces of addiction. We meet them on a daily basis, they become our friends and family. There may be some common factors, but addiction impacts each person in different ways, as does recovery and deliverance. Each one who has, unfortunately, been caught up in a vicious cycle, but all have the chance to beat addiction, overcome past abuse, and continue living for something greater. That something better comes in the person of Jesus Christ.

Dallas International Street Church is home to many who are desperate for sobriety. That is why Yancy, who even though on the outside looked like he had it all together but was secretly struggling, understands that in order to be free from an addiction, you must have a personal relationship with Jesus.

In his own words...

My name is Yancy. I was a child that was born into a world of drug addicts, a newborn who came into the world with heroin in my system. Being born into that lifestyle it was easy for me to follow. I began using and selling drugs, it was my way of life, and practicing witchcraft went hand in hand with drug use."

"Because of my parents' addiction my grandmother took me in and raised me. She did all she could to raise me right, she took me to church often and she prayed over and for me. As a child she would tell me, “You are a child of God and He has a plan for you in this world.”

Now I am in my 40s and has had my life forever changed. I met Jesus and He gave me a purpose far higher than I ever knew possible. I have learned His word and do my very best to walk I should. God has given me my own style of praise and worship Rapp that allows me to express myself in a new and exciting way.”

I am so grateful that God continued to love me through everything I did. He showed His love in many ways, but one of the most impactful ways was He gave me my grandmother. When she passed on to heaven God's word gave me comfort. In His word we are told “Even if my mother and father abandon me God will always hold me close. I thank God for DISC, and for Pastor Karen Dudley who helped fill the void left by my earthly parents.”
